Derren Brown: Only Human Reviews: What the Critics Say

Derren Brown: Only Human

Only Human opens at the Apollo Theatre on 10 October 2026, but the reviews already exist: the show sold out a UK and Ireland tour first, and the critics who saw it were impressed. Here is what they said, with every verdict kept spoiler-free, and the London reviews will be added after press night on 21 October.

The Critics' Verdict

The tour notices were warm to glowing, and strikingly consistent: the craft, pace and polish are not in question from anyone. On: Yorkshire Magazine called it "polished to within an inch of perfection" and "astonishing from first beat to last"; Secret Stage Reviews gave it 4/5; Beyond the Curtain reached for "a theatrical masterpiece"; Suffolk on Stage called him "a consummate showman" delivering "entertainment for all". The only recurring reservation came from reviewers who have seen all his previous shows and found some rhythms familiar.

What the Reviews Praised

The performer, first. On: Yorkshire caught the stage persona in six words: "genial, faintly amused, quietly omnipotent." Secret Stage Reviews (4/5) enjoyed the same balance: "Brown is a mix of donnish authority and playground cheek", and made a point of how respectfully audience volunteers are treated. The production values drew their own praise, with Beyond the Curtain singling out the storytelling, set, sound and lighting. And every reviewer, without exception, kept the secrets, telling you plenty about the kind of night this is.

Where Reviews Were Mixed

One honest thread, not a split: veterans of his earlier shows found moments of deja vu, and Secret Stage Reviews felt it lacked the emotional gut-punch of his previous show, Showman, compensating instead with pace and variety. Nobody doubted the evening; the argument was only about where it ranks among his own.

Is Only Human Right for You?

If you have never seen Derren Brown live, the tour critics are unanimous: you will be floored, and this is a strong first one. If you have seen several, expect an evening of first-class craft that rhymes with what you have loved before rather than reinventing it. Either way it is spoiler-fragile, so book before someone at work sees it first. On the fence? Call us on 020 7193 9050 and a real person will talk it through, spoilers withheld.
