Mme Tussaud arrived in England from France in 1802 with 35 wax figures inherited from her uncle. After travelling around the country with her show she settled in Baker Street in 1835. By the time of her death in 1850 the show had become an institution with celebrities.
The entertainment was carried on by Madame Tussaud's sons.In 1884, when it was transferred to its present site, it contained 400 figures. It was damamged by fire in 1925 and by bombs in the Blitz in 1940, but the casts survived.
