What It Is

A real murder case staged as a trial, with the audience in the jury's seat.

The evening opens on screen, setting out the backdrop to the case, and then moves to the stage for the trial itself. The evidence is put in front of you and you are the ones weighing it. It is written, produced and directed in house by Tigerslane Studios, whose director is Graham Watts. Death in the Family is the fifth case they have staged, and like the four before it, it is a real one.

The content guidance is the strongest of any event in this run: 16 and over, and the theatre warns of disturbing content and images. That is not boilerplate on a show built from a real killing.

What Tickets Cost

Most tickets sit between £40 and £60, and tickets start at £35. This is the narrowest ladder of the Adelphi's one-night events, so there is not much to gain by trading up.

Who It Is For

  • Anyone who follows true crime and wants it presented as evidence rather than as a documentary.
  • People who like being asked to decide. The format puts the case to the room.
  • Not for you if you are squeamish, or under sixteen. The theatre's own warning is explicit.

Know Before You Book

Age guidance is 16 and over, and the theatre warns of disturbing content and images. It runs about 2 hours 50 minutes, including a 20-minute interval. The audience is the jury: there is a 10-minute deliberation for casting your verdict.

Practical

Adelphi Theatre, 409-412 Strand, WC2R 0NS. Charing Cross is four to five minutes. Arrive twenty to twenty-five minutes before, because one queue on the Strand takes the whole audience.

The Stalls are the only level without stairs, and there is no lift to either Circle.

Where to Sit

The Adelphi is a wide theatre with a stage set high, holding around 1,500 across three levels.

The centre of the Stalls, rows C to L, is the pick for almost anything here. Side seats are better value than they look, because the room is wide, so from the side you lose the angle rather than the view.

The Dress Circle gives a clean view of the whole stage and sits further back than a Dress Circle usually does. The Upper Circle is the cheapest level and the front block is the best value in the building.

Seating for a one-night event can differ from the resident production, including whether the short front row is in. Check the plan for this date. Where to sit in the Stalls has the detail.

About This Event

The fifth in the series. The producers describe the previous four as sold out, which is their billing rather than our count.

All six of the Adelphi's one-night events fall on a Sunday, which is the night neither resident production plays. Our Adelphi Theatre guide lists what else is on.
