Regent's Park Open Air Theatre, London

It is what the name says. A 1,304-seat open air amphitheatre inside the Inner Circle of Regent's Park, ten minutes' walk from Baker Street, with proper fold-down seats and no roof.

Two levels, and they are not called Stalls and Circle: Lower Tier, rows A to J, and Upper Tier, rows K to U. It is one continuous block of 21 rows, not a Stalls with a circle on top of it.

Our short answer on seats: sit centre, anywhere from a couple of rows back to about row N. The rows curve round the stage, so a seat towards the side still faces it, but is just a little more side on.

If it rains, you are still going. The theatre never calls a performance off for rain before the advertised start time, and on average 94% of performances are completed each season.

Gates open 90 minutes before the performance, and the picnic lawn is what they are open for. You may bring your own and eat it there, so if you are eating, come when the gates open rather than when the show starts. All of that depends on the weather, so check the forecast before you build an evening round it.

Below: the seating plan and the two tiers in detail, what happens when the weather turns, how to get here and where the entrance actually is, what the site is like to move around, eating and drinking before the show, and more about the theatre.

Regent's Park Open Air Theatre FAQs

Is Regent's Park Open Air Theatre really outdoors, and are there proper seats?

Yes to both. It is a fixed amphitheatre with 1,304 cushioned, fold-down seats in numbered rows, 17 inches between the arm rests and 16.5 inches deep, and no roof over any of them.

Is it free to go to Regent's Park Open Air Theatre?

The park is free and the theatre is not. It is a ticketed theatre inside the park, run by a registered charity. You cannot see the stage from the park, so there is no free view to find.

Is Regent's Park Open Air Theatre in the West End?

No. It is in Regent's Park, NW1, about ten minutes on foot from Baker Street, and listings file it as Off West End. It seats 1,304, and the productions staged here regularly transfer into town and go on to tour afterwards.

Is there a dress code?

There is none. The theatre does not publish one, so wear whatever you like. Dressing for the weather is the part that matters, and the weather route covers what to bring. Even the most glorious of evenings turns a bit colder later on, so please think ahead.

Can I take children?

Under-4s are not admitted, except at selected family productions where the line drops to 2+. Every child aged 4 and over needs their own ticket, and at a family production an under-2 can sit on a lap but still needs one.

Can I pay cash?

No. The theatre is cashless everywhere on site, including the bars and everywhere that sells food, and it takes all the major cards except Diners Club.

Is there a student discount at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre?

The theatre does not publish one. Its concessions are set out on its own ticket prices page and a student rate is not among them.

How long do performances run?

No performance here runs more than three hours, whatever is on. CATS ran about 2 hours 15 minutes including the interval, and each production publishes its own running time.

Can I smoke on site?

No, and that includes the grounds as well as the auditorium. If you need to leave during the performance, staff will let you out through the Exit Gate.

What's on at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre tonight?

During the season, whatever is listed above, Monday to Saturday with matinees on selected days. Out of season, from October until the spring, the theatre is closed, Box Office in the park included.

Is there a promo code or discount code for Regent's Park Open Air Theatre?

There is no promo code. The theatre does not issue them, and the discount-code sites that rank for the phrase are working from the same published prices as everyone else. What you pay depends on where you sit. Book with us and it is all-in pricing, the price you see is what you pay.

Can I take photos?

Not while the show is on, whether you are in the auditorium or on the lawn, and phones should be switched off for the performance.
