Regent's Park Open Air Theatre Seating Plan

Two tiers, one continuous run of rows from A to U, and a gangway across the middle where one ends and the other begins. There is no Dress Circle here and no Stalls, what you are choosing between is Lower Tier, rows A to J, and Upper Tier, rows K to U.

The stage pushes out into the audience with seats wrapped around it in a semi circle, so most seats look straight at it and those towards the ends are a little more side on.

There are 21 rows in all, so twenty rows back here is the last row in the building, where twenty rows back in a West End theatre would leave you in the middle of a circle with plenty of seats still behind you.

Lower Tier or Upper Tier?

Sit centre before you worry about which tier you are in. The seats start at stage level and rise from there, and anything from a couple of rows back to about row N is a fantastic seat, which takes in the whole of the Lower Tier and the first rows of the Upper. The rows are wrapped in a semicircle, so a seat towards the side of a block is not the penalty it would be in a theatre with a proscenium arch.

Beyond the distance, two things separate the tiers.

The steps. Rows A to I are reached by steps on a gentler incline. The Upper Tier rows are steep, with a handrail at the end of each row, and the theatre says plainly that they do not suit anyone with limited mobility. Between the two sits row J, the only row in the theatre with no steps at all, in the gangway where one tier ends and the other begins.

The price. The middle of the Upper Tier, from row K back to around row N, is usually sold at the same top price as the front of the Lower Tier, so it is not the saving it looks. The lower prices are further back and further out towards the ends of the rows. The one row to skip is K, which has a rail across its front and is not priced like a cheap seat.

The two tiers at a glance

  • Lower Tier, rows A to J. The best seats in the theatre, gentler steps, and row J with level access and the legroom
  • Upper Tier, rows K to U. Steep steps and handrails, the cheapest seats in the theatre, and the row to avoid is the first one

The theatre also sells Grass Banks at the far sides of the auditorium on some performances, where you sit on the grass rather than on a seat. They are not part of the seating plan and they are not always available.

The shadier side

At a sunny afternoon performance, the highest seat numbers are the ones most likely to be in shade. You won't see this on the seating plan, but it can make a huge difference on a hot day.

What it costs

The premium seats are the centre block of the Lower Tier and up to six seats either side of the centre aisle in the side blocks. Book with us and it is all-in pricing, the price you see is what you pay.
