Stalls at the Vaudeville Theatre

310 seats, almost half the theatre, in rows AZ and then A to S (there's no row I), with seats 1 to 18 across most rows.

Where to sit

Almost everyone is well served down here. The Stalls are closest to the stage, they have the most legroom of the three levels, good in every row even for tall people, and they're the only level you can reach without climbing stairs. There's a nice rake, and the view stays decent right to the back row.

The centre of rows D to G is where we'd put you, and seats 9 and 10 if you can get them. You're close, but back far enough to take in the whole stage without looking up. If you want nothing at all in front of you, take an end seat in row A, which row AZ doesn't reach.

For less money, go to the back. Rows P to S are cheaper, the rake is at its steepest there, and you still see the whole show. The Dress Circle starts to overhang the Stalls at row J, but for SIX you don't lose any of the stage, because most of the show happens down at stage level. Behind about row N, the lighting at the top of the stage can be out of sight, and nothing more.

Row AZ is the front row, in front of row A. It has ten seats, tucked inside the width of row A, right up against a fairly high stage, so you're looking up. For SIX, the centre spotlight used in the solo numbers shines straight out into the middle of AZ, and the front row gets some attention from the cast near the end. For those who like the feeling of being at a pop concert, these seats are great. Otherwise, we'd recommend sitting a few rows back.

Seats to think twice about

The two seats at each end of rows A to G sit outside the frame of the stage, and the lighting and sound equipment fixed to the walls takes out the edges. At the back, the sound desk takes out the middle seats of rows Q, R and S. It doesn't block anyone's view, but it's lit, someone works at it all show, and sitting right next to it is distracting, so pick a seat a few along from it.

If you're short, think twice about rows AZ to C. The first four rows are flat, so a tall head in front of you matters more there. There are also pillars at the sides of the Stalls around row N, which make the ends of those rows feel a little closed in without really getting in the way of the view.

Steps, drinks and toilets

No lift here, but it's only six steps down from the foyer, with handrails, and a stair climber takes wheelchair users to the two spaces at the ends of row M. Access explains how it works.

There's no bar on this level. The nearest is the Foyer kiosk, back up the steps by the Box Office, and the big Dress Circle bar can be reached from the Stalls too. The Ladies are on the Stalls level; the Gents and the gender-neutral toilet are up in the Dress Circle. If the stairs are a problem, staff can bring drinks and snacks to your seat.

Stalls FAQs

Which is the front row of the Stalls at the Vaudeville?

Row AZ, not row A. AZ sits in front of A, closest to the stage, with ten seats rather than sixteen, so ask for AZ if you want the front row.

Are the back rows of the Stalls any good?

Yes, and for SIX they're cheaper. You're further away, but the view is clear, and the overhang only takes some of the lighting at the top of the stage.
