By tube
Covent Garden (Piccadilly line) and Leicester Square (Piccadilly and Northern lines) are both about five minutes' walk.
- From Covent Garden, cross Long Acre, walk up Mercer Street, and the theatre is at the top, on Seven Dials.
- From Leicester Square, walk up Charing Cross Road to Cambridge Circus, along Shaftesbury Avenue past West Street, and down Earlham Street to Seven Dials.
Tottenham Court Road (Central, Northern and Elizabeth lines) is the nearest step-free station, about 500 metres away: come out on to Charing Cross Road, turn left at Shaftesbury Avenue, and head down Earlham Street to Seven Dials. All three stations get very busy at peak times.
By train
Charing Cross is the nearest mainline station, about ten minutes on foot by way of St Martin's Lane.
By bus
The closest stops are at Cambridge Circus on Charing Cross Road, about three minutes' walk. Which bus to take depends on where you're coming from:
- From North London: the 19 (Finsbury Park, Highbury and Angel), the 24 (the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead and Camden Town) and the 29 (Turnpike Lane, Finsbury Park and Camden Town), to Cambridge Circus
- From South London: the 176 (Penge, Dulwich, Camberwell, Elephant & Castle and Waterloo) and the 24 (Pimlico, Victoria and Westminster), to Cambridge Circus
- From West London: the 14 (Putney, Fulham, South Kensington and Knightsbridge), to Gerrard Place on Shaftesbury Avenue, about four minutes away
- From the east and the City: the 8 (Bow, Bethnal Green, Liverpool Street and Bank), which ends at St Giles High Street, about four minutes away
Late at night, the N5, N20, N29, N41 and N279 stop at Cambridge Circus too.
By taxi
The easiest place to be dropped off is Earlham Street, right beside the theatre. After the show, walk up Earlham Street to Charing Cross Road, where it's easier to hail a black cab. Seven Dials itself has no kerbs, and cars and people share the cobbles, so take care.
By car
There's no parking at the theatre. The nearest car parks are Q-Park Chinatown, on Newport Place, about five minutes' walk, and Intelli-Park on Parker Mews. Book a space in advance if you can.
The theatre is inside the Congestion Charge zone, which runs from 7am to 6pm on weekdays and from midday to 6pm at weekends. Arrive after 6pm for an evening performance and you won't pay it; for a matinee you will, currently £18 a day. The ULEZ applies around the clock if your car doesn't meet its standards.
Blue Badge holders have one bay beside the front entrance (Monday to Saturday after 6:30pm, and Sundays), with more on Long Acre, Floral Street and Bow Street.
What time to arrive
Arrive 15 to 20 minutes before, no later. Every bag is searched on the way in. There's no lift, so allow a little longer if you're in one of the circles: the Upper Circle is 67 steps up.
If you're late, you'll be taken in at a suitable break in the show. Matilda opens with Miracle, and that's the first thing you'll miss.
