The Cambridge Theatre is on the Seven Dials junction, so almost everything below is inside three minutes, with Covent Garden, Neal's Yard and Soho all close by. Matilda starts at 7pm, though, so book dinner for five rather than six: most pre-theatre menus round here are timed for a 7:30pm curtain.
Restaurants
Seven Dials Market (1 minute). 35 Earlham Street. Twenty-one traders under one roof on the theatre's own street. No booking needed for the outdoor seating, which makes it the fastest way to feed a group that hasn't planned ahead, and everyone can eat something different.
Homeslice (2 minutes). 13 Neal's Yard. Twenty-inch pizzas, whole or by the slice. No bookings at all, and the quickest cheap meal in the area.
The Ivy (3 minutes). 1-5 West Street. The reputation for being impossible to get into is long out of date: it books three months ahead and takes walk-ins. There's a set menu on weekdays, served until 6pm, and the dress code is smart casual.
Bars and pubs
The Crown (1 minute). 43 Monmouth Street. Right on the Seven Dials junction, so it's the nearest pint to the theatre door. Drinkers stand here, so don't count on a table.
The Cambridge (3 minutes). 93 Charing Cross Road. Opens at 10am and stays open late, so it works before and after the show.
The Lamb & Flag (6 minutes). 33 Rose Street. The oldest pub in Covent Garden, with a real fire, and it takes bookings. Rose Street is a hidden alley off Garrick Street.
Hotels
Radisson Blu Hotel, London Mercer Street (2 minutes). 20 Mercer Street. A refurbished four-star on the street you'd walk up from Covent Garden station, with a gym open around the clock. The entry-grade rooms are small, so ask about the next size up.
Covent Garden Hotel (2 minutes). 10 Monmouth Street. Five-star, with fifty-eight rooms and a screening room, and its brasserie runs a pre-theatre set menu, so you can eat without leaving the hotel.
Z Hotel Soho (4 minutes). 17 Moor Street. Compact rooms at sharp prices, just off Cambridge Circus.
