Restaurants, Bars and Hotels Near the Dominion Theatre

Now playing: The Devil Wears Prada From £30 Book tickets

The Dominion stands where Tottenham Court Road meets New Oxford Street, with Bloomsbury on one side and Seven Dials and Soho on the other.

Most of the eating is a few minutes' walk rather than right outside the door. Pre-theatre menus around here stop serving at six, so for a 7:30pm curtain, book a table for 6pm and tell them which show you are seeing.

Restaurants

Din Tai Fung, 11 St Giles Square, about 2 minutes. Centre Point is across the square from the theatre, so this is as close as eating gets here. Taiwanese dumplings, xiao long bao made in front of you behind glass, and it seats over 200, which matters at 6pm on a Saturday when everywhere smaller has gone. They take bookings and you should use one.

Tattu, The Now Building, Denmark Street, about 3 minutes. Modern Chinese at the top of the Outernet, opposite the tube exit. This is the occasion booking rather than the quick one: a cherry-blossom tree through the middle of the room, a long cocktail list, and prices to match. Book it when the theatre trip is the evening rather than the start of one.

Hawksmoor Seven Dials, 11 Langley Street, about 9 minutes. A proper steak dinner if you can eat early. The Express menu stops at 5:45pm midweek and 5pm at weekends, and the kitchen closes between 3pm and 4:30pm on weekdays.

Mon Plaisir, 19-21 Monmouth Street, about 8 minutes. London's oldest French restaurant, and it has been feeding theatregoers long enough to have the timing down to the minute. There is a pre-theatre menu.

Seven Dials Market, 35 Earlham Street, about 8 minutes. Twenty-one traders under one roof, communal tables, no booking and no ceremony. The answer when nobody reserved anything and you have forty minutes.

Bars and pubs

The Museum Tavern, 49 Great Russell Street, about 5 minutes. The closest proper pub to the theatre, directly opposite the British Museum, with the Victorian mirrors and woodwork still in place. Quieter before a show than the Seven Dials pubs, because the museum crowd has gone home by then.

Freud, 198 Shaftesbury Avenue, about 5 minutes. A basement bar that has been going since 1986, known for its cocktails. It does not open until 4pm, and it is down a flight of stairs with no lift.

The Crown, 43 Monmouth Street, about 9 minutes. On the Seven Dials junction, the last surviving pub of the seven corners, with the original tiling still in place. A standing pub, so go for the atmosphere rather than a quiet sit down.

The Two Brewers, 40 Monmouth Street, about 9 minutes. A theatrical pub in the proper sense, walls covered in stage photographs, food served until nine. One bar, so it fills quickly.

Hotels

The Z Hotel Soho, 17 Moor Street, about 6 minutes. A cheap bed, straight down Charing Cross Road to Cambridge Circus. The rooms are small and modern, which is all you need when the evening is spent at the theatre and the morning is spent leaving.

The Bloomsbury Hotel, 16-22 Great Russell Street, about 2 minutes. The closest good hotel to the door, and the walk back after a show is a calm one rather than a scrum.

Rosewood London, 252 High Holborn, about 11 minutes. An Edwardian building set around its own courtyard, with a spa, the Holborn Dining Room, and a bar worth a drink after the show. The most expensive option here and it looks it.

Radisson Blu Hotel, London Mercer Street, 20 Mercer Street, about 7 minutes. Four star, recently refurbished, gym open around the clock. The entry-grade rooms are small, so book up a grade if that matters to you.

hub by Premier Inn Covent Garden, 110 St Martin's Lane, about 12 minutes. Compact rooms at a sensible price.

Nearby FAQs

Where should I eat before a show at the Dominion Theatre?

Seven Dials, eight or nine minutes away, has plenty of restaurants with pre-theatre menus. Book a table for six at the latest if the curtain is at half past seven, and say which show you are seeing so the kitchen paces it.

Are there pubs near the Dominion Theatre?

The Museum Tavern on Great Russell Street is the closest at about five minutes, and the easiest one to get a seat in before a show. The Seven Dials pubs, The Crown and The Two Brewers, have more character and are about nine minutes away.

Is there an Italian restaurant near the Dominion Theatre?

Ciao Bella on Lamb's Conduit Street is the closest long-standing one, though at about 13 minutes it is a longer walk than the rest of this list, over on the Bloomsbury side. Classic Italian, there since 1983, reasonably priced, with a resident pianist most evenings.
