Access at the Donmar Warehouse

Access bookings here are handled by the theatre's own access team, not by us.

The Donmar was substantially refurbished in 2021 and a good deal of that work was on access, so anything you read about the building from before then is describing a different one.

Getting to the door

Earlham Street is cobbled, but there is a pavement on both sides with a smoother surface, and there is a dropped kerb at either end of the street. Outside the theatre there is a push button that opens the front doors.

The lift

A lift serves all three floors:

  • Ground floor: foyer and Box Office
  • First floor: Stalls, and the bar on that level
  • Second floor: Circle, and the accessible toilet

Wheelchair spaces

Two spaces in the Stalls at each performance. The theatre also welcomes audiences transferring from a wheelchair onto the bench seating.

The accessible toilet is on the second floor at Circle level, a floor above the wheelchair spaces. The lift makes that workable, but work it out before the interval rather than during it. It has a left-hand transfer rail, an emergency red cord, a paddle lever flush, a sink you can reach from the toilet, and both a hand dryer and paper towels.

Steps inside the auditorium

Neither level is flat, and the two are different:

  • Stalls. Row C is the level-access row. From there it is two steps down to row A, one step down to row B and one step up to row D. There are no handrails on any of them
  • Circle. Four steps down to row A, one step up to row B and six steps up to row C. These do have handrails

Hearing

There is a Radio Frequency assistive listening system in the auditorium, and hearing loops at all front of house counters. There is no charge for either.

Assistance dogs

Guide, hearing and emotional support assistance dogs are welcome in the auditorium. Tell the theatre in advance, and if you would rather not take the dog in with you, staff will look after it during the performance.

Before you come

The theatre publishes a Visual Story, a picture guide to the building and what happens on the night, which is worth a look if a new place is difficult.

Audio described and captioned performances

Every production gets both, and they land in the same slots each time: audio described on a Saturday at 2:30pm, captioned on a Monday at 7:30pm.

Production Audio described Captioned

Booking an access ticket

Access tickets are £15 and are available in each price across the run, and a companion ticket is free. Booking is through the theatre's own access scheme: you register once with a Donmar account, and the wheelchair spaces then appear under the other-preferences tab when you book. You can also do it in person or over the phone with the theatre.

Access FAQs

Is there a lift at the Donmar Warehouse?

Yes, and it serves all three floors: the foyer and Box Office on the ground, the Stalls and their bar on the first, the Circle and the accessible toilet on the second.

Is the Donmar Warehouse wheelchair accessible?

Yes. There are two wheelchair spaces in the Stalls at every performance, reached by lift, and the front doors open on a push button outside. The accessible toilet is one floor up at Circle level. Access seats are booked directly with the theatre's own access team.
