Restaurants, Pubs and Hotels Near the Donmar Warehouse

Seven Dials puts a lot of restaurants within a few minutes of the Donmar Warehouse, most of them close enough that you can leave it late. The theatre's own bars are small, so have the drink beforehand somewhere else.

For a 7.30 start, book a table for about six.

Where to eat

  • Flesh & Buns, 41 Earlham Street. Under a minute. Japanese izakaya, open from midday and late enough on a Wednesday to Saturday to work after the show as well
  • Seven Dials Market, 35 to 41 Earlham Street. 1 minute. Twenty-odd independent counters under one roof, no booking, communal tables. The answer when you have not booked and there are more than two of you. It is loud and there is no air conditioning, so it is not the place to sit for an hour in July
  • Hawksmoor Seven Dials, 11 Langley Street. 3 minutes. Steak, and the one to pick when the evening is the occasion. Book ahead. The kitchen shuts between 3pm and 5pm on weekdays, so a 5pm table is the move
  • Brother Marcus, 23 Slingsby Place. 3 minutes. Eastern Mediterranean small plates over two terraces. It runs a fixed pre-theatre sitting from 5pm to 7pm, Tuesday to Friday, which puts you in your seat with time to spare

Where to drink

  • The Crown, 43 Monmouth Street. 2 minutes. The nearest proper pint to the door, on the Seven Dials junction. It is a standing pub, so do not count on a table
  • The Two Brewers, 40 Monmouth Street. 2 to 3 minutes. Hung with stage photographs and full of people who work in theatres. Food until 9pm, which matters at a theatre that sells none
  • The Cambridge, 93 Charing Cross Road. 4 minutes. On the Cambridge Circus corner, and the one with the latest licence, so it works after a short play as well as before one

Where to stay

  • Radisson Blu Hotel, London Mercer Street, 20 Mercer Street. 2 minutes. The closest real hotel to the theatre. Four star, recently refurbished, with a restaurant on the ground floor and its own door onto Monmouth Street
  • Middle Eight, 66 Great Queen Street. 7 minutes. The upper end of the choices here, with a bar and a restaurant on site, which is the point at seven minutes out: you are not walking back into Seven Dials for dinner
  • The Z Hotel Covent Garden, 31 to 33 Bedford Street. 6 minutes. The rooms are small and everybody says so, but it is clean, central and the one to book if you would rather the money went on the tickets
