Finding the door, because people walk past it!
The Donmar does not look like a theatre from the street. The entrance is a small shop doorway with a neon sign above it, on the left-hand side coming down from Seven Dials, roughly two thirds of the way along and past the shopping arcade entrances. If you have walked down the side of the Cambridge Theatre and gone by the arcade, you are nearly there. If you reach Cambridge Circus you have gone too far.
The entrance area inside is very small, again it feels more like an office as you walk in versus a theatre.
By tube
Covent Garden is the closest at about 3 minutes, on the Piccadilly line. Leicester Square is about 5, on the Piccadilly and Northern. Tottenham Court Road is about 8, on the Central, Northern and Elizabeth lines, and Holborn is about 8 on the Central and Piccadilly. Charing Cross is about 10, and is the mainline station as well.
Covent Garden is the shortest walk but the smallest station, and it queues badly for the lifts after a show. Leicester Square is a slightly longer walk and usually quicker to get out of.
By bus
The 14, 19, 24, 29, 38 and 176 all stop at Cambridge Circus, at Stop D, where Charing Cross Road meets Shaftesbury Avenue. From there it is a few minutes up Earlham Street. At night the N5, N19, N20, N29, N38, N41 and N279 use the same stop.
Nothing stops outside the theatre itself. Earlham Street is narrow and mostly pedestrian traffic.
By bike
There are cycle racks on Earlham Street, close to the theatre, and the nearest hire docking station is on Drury Lane.
Driving and parking
There is no parking at the theatre and Earlham Street is inside the Congestion Charge zone. The car park the Donmar points people at is Q-Park Chinatown on Newport Place, where Donmar audiences get 50% off up to four hours if you book online in advance.
By taxi
There is no rank on Earlham Street. The nearest is at Charing Cross station, which is a walk in itself; to hail one, go up to Charing Cross Road.
What time to arrive
Arrive 15 to 20 minutes before, no later. There is not usually much of a queue and you get in quickly, but the entrance area is small and the auditorium is up a flight of stairs, so it is not a place to cut fine. If you are late you will watch the opening on a monitor in the Circle bar, and on a production with no interval that may be the whole evening.
