Three levels, stacked close together: the Stalls, the Dress Circle and the Grand Circle. The Stalls run from row A to row X, with two extra rows, AA and BB, added in front for some shows. The Dress Circle has five rows, A to E, and so does the Grand Circle. This is an intimate theatre, so nobody is far from the stage, but the back of the Stalls is harder to see from than you might expect.
The one thing to understand before you pick a seat
The stage is high and the Dress Circle hangs low over the back of the Stalls, and the two pull in opposite directions. Sit right at the front and you're looking up; sit too far back and you lose the top of the stage. So the sweet spot is the front of the Dress Circle, or the centre of the Stalls from about row D to row L.
Should I sit in the Stalls or the Dress Circle?
The Dress Circle, as a general rule. The front three rows give a lovely clean view of the whole stage. If you'd rather be close to the action, the Stalls in front of row M are excellent too, and in a theatre this small it's definitely a bonus to sit close. What we'd avoid is the back of the Stalls, from row O, where the overhang comes low enough to take the top of the stage and the pillars start to get in the way.
The levels at a glance
- Stalls, rows AA and BB, then A to X. The centre from about row D to row L is the pick; from row O back it gets harder to see, and the side blocks are the better of the back seats
- Dress Circle, rows A to E, level with the foyer. The front three rows are the best all-round view in the theatre
- Grand Circle, rows A to E, up 25 steps and down 8. Small, close and good value, but tight for legroom
Restricted view seats
The slim pillars in the Stalls are the ones to know about. There's one at each end of row G, and more at the ends of the centre block in rows N and R. The seats behind them are always marked as restricted when you go through to buy tickets. In the circles, the seats at the very ends of the rows lose the side of the stage to the curve of the circle.
Taller? The best seats for legroom
Book the Stalls if you can. Our picks for long legs, level by level:
- Stalls: row N in the side blocks, which has extra legroom (the pillars in row N are in the centre block). Row C is tight, and so is everything from row O back if you're over about 5ft 11
- Dress Circle: fine for most people in rows A and D; the centre of rows B and C has the least room
- Grand Circle: tight almost everywhere, and worst in row A. An aisle seat helps
Step-free seating
The Dress Circle, which is level with the foyer. The wheelchair space is in the centre of row E, with companion seats beside it. The access page has the detail.

Seating Plan FAQs
What are the best seats at the Garrick Theatre?
The front three rows of the Dress Circle, for the best overall view, and the centre of the Stalls from about row D to row L, for being close to the action. The Grand Circle is small and still feels close, so it's a good pick if you want to keep the cost down.
Are there any seats to avoid at the Garrick Theatre?
The back of the Stalls, from row O. The Dress Circle overhang comes quite low, so you miss the top of the stage early, and the pillars at the ends of the centre block in rows N and R get in the way. If you do sit back there, the side blocks are the better choice, as they're less affected by the pillars. The back row of the Dress Circle feels a little far from the stage. If in doubt, call us and we'll keep you clear of them.
Is it called the Grand Circle or the Upper Circle?
The Garrick calls its top level the Grand Circle. It's the level other theatres call the Upper Circle.
