Which door?

There are two entrances, and the one on Charing Cross Road isn't the main one.

  • Phoenix Street is the main entrance, round the corner off Charing Cross Road. It's where the queue forms, and the Grand Circle has its own door here, immediately to the left of the main foyer. It's one shallow step up from the street, with a ramp on request.
  • Charing Cross Road is the newer and bigger foyer, with the Noël Coward Bar. It's level from the street and it's where the lift is. From here it's stairs down to the Stalls or up to the Dress Circle, but there's no way through to the Grand Circle.

A map app given the address will take you to the Charing Cross Road door. If you're in the Grand Circle, go round to Phoenix Street.

By tube

Tottenham Court Road (Central, Northern and Elizabeth lines) is the nearest, 2 to 5 minutes' walk. Come out towards Charing Cross Road and walk south. Leicester Square (Northern and Piccadilly) is 5 to 7 minutes the other way: walk north up Charing Cross Road past Cambridge Circus. Covent Garden (Piccadilly) is 8 to 10 minutes.

Coming from Waterloo, allow about 15 minutes door to door: the Northern line to Leicester Square, then walk up. On a nice day it's a lovely walk the whole way instead, about 25 minutes over Waterloo Bridge.

By train

Charing Cross is the nearest mainline station, 10 to 15 minutes on foot, or one stop on the Northern line to Leicester Square. Tottenham Court Road is also on the Elizabeth line, from Paddington and Heathrow to the west and Liverpool Street and Stratford to the east.

By bus

The closest stops are on Charing Cross Road itself, at Denmark Street and at Cambridge Circus, about a minute from the door. Which bus to take depends on where you're coming from:

  • From North London: the 24 (the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead and Camden Town), the 29 (Turnpike Lane, Finsbury Park and Camden Town) and the 19 (Finsbury Park, Highbury and Angel)
  • From West London: the 14 (Putney, Fulham and South Kensington)
  • From South London: the 176 (Penge, Dulwich, Elephant & Castle and Waterloo) and the 24 (Pimlico and Victoria)

Three or four minutes away, round Tottenham Court Road station and St Giles High Street, more routes stop:

  • From the east and the City: the 8 (Bow, Liverpool Street and St Paul's) and the 55 (Walthamstow, Hackney and Old Street)
  • From North London: the 73 (Stoke Newington, Angel and King's Cross) and the 390 (Archway and King's Cross)
  • From West London: the 98 (Willesden, Kilburn and Marble Arch)
  • From South London: the 188 (Greenwich, Elephant & Castle and Waterloo)

Late at night, the N5, N20, N29, N41 and N279 stop on Charing Cross Road too.

The two Charing Cross Road stops are on opposite sides of a busy road, so check which one you need before you cross.

By car

There's no parking at the theatre, but three car parks are within walking distance:

  • Q-Park Chinatown, Newport Place, about five minutes, with EV charging
  • Urban Parking, 42 Shelton Street, about five minutes towards Seven Dials, open 24 hours
  • NCP Brewer Street, in Soho, about ten minutes. Open 24 hours, but only 20 spaces, so book ahead

All of them get busy on show nights, so book a space in advance if you can.

The theatre is inside the Congestion Charge zone, which runs from 7am to 6pm on weekdays and from midday to 6pm at weekends. Arrive after 6pm for an evening performance and you won't pay it; for a matinee you will, currently £18 a day. The ULEZ applies around the clock if your car doesn't meet its standards.

The easiest place to be dropped off, or to get out of a taxi, is outside the main entrance on Phoenix Street. After the show, cabs are easy to hail on Charing Cross Road. The disabled bays on Stacey Street, behind the theatre, are private bays for residents, and blocking them can mean a fine.

What time to arrive

Arrive 15 to 20 minutes before, no later. There are bag checks at both doors and a queue on Phoenix Street as curtain up gets close. You can get into the foyers and bars from 90 minutes before the show, and into the auditorium from about 30 minutes before. There's no pre-show.

If you're late, you'll watch on a screen in the foyer and staff will take you in at set points in the performance. For Stranger Things that can mean waiting until the interval.
