Loges, Slips and Boxes at the Prince Edward Theatre
Now playing: Beetlejuice From £25 Book tickets
This theatre sells four different kinds of side seat, and they are nothing like each other. That is why the advice you find about them contradicts itself: one guide is describing a Loge and the next is describing a Box, and they reach opposite conclusions about what is meant to be the same thing.
Here they are in order, best first.
1. The Loges, and they are the best seats on this page
Ten Loges, 26 seats between them, two to four seats each, five down each side of the Dress Circle. You will not find many London theatres with this many, and they are some of our favourite seats in the West End.
They sit at the front edge of the Dress Circle, angled in towards the stage, and very little gets in the way. Two or three seats to yourself, close in, and an angle on the show that nobody in the middle of the Stalls is getting. Very few London theatres have anything like them.
If a Loge is available on your date, take it.
2. Dress Circle slips
Raised up at the side of the Dress Circle, and not as far round towards the edge as a Box is. On the theatre's own plan they are Slip Box 1 and Slip Box 2, four seats in each.
The view holds up, on one condition: you have to be content sitting side-on and leaning in a bit. Nobody picks these ahead of a centre seat. Judge them on price instead, and at the right price they are a good buy.
3. Grand Circle slips
Row AA at the front of the Grand Circle, curving away to each side. The theatre's own name for them is the Grand Slips, and they are seats 1 to 5 on one side and 6 to 10 on the other, with the two Grand Circle Boxes between them.
You see a lot less from these. They are usually very cheap and that is the trade. If the price difference against a front-centre Grand Circle seat is small, take the centre seat instead.
4. The Boxes, and we would steer you away from them
Very much on the side. We are not big fans of Boxes for a theatre show, here or anywhere, because you miss parts of the show sitting right on the side of the stage.
The Boxes sit at all three levels: two at Stalls level, four at Dress Circle level and two at Grand Circle level.
What to book instead. At the same sort of money, a centre Dress Circle seat or a centre Stalls seat will show you more of the show than any Box in this building. If what you actually want is the private space and nobody climbing past you all evening, then a Box does that and a Loge does it better, with a much better view attached.
One thing the Stalls Boxes do that nothing else here does: Box 1 is where the wheelchair spaces are, and that is a different conversation, covered on the access route.
Boxes FAQs
What are slip seats at the theatre?
Seats along the side of a circle, raised up and angled in towards the stage rather than facing it square on. They are usually among the cheapest seats on their level, and how good they are depends entirely on how far round the side they sit. At this theatre the Dress Circle slips are a fair deal when they are cheap, and the Grand Circle slips see a good deal less.
Are the Boxes worth it at the Prince Edward Theatre?
For the view, no. They are well round to the side and you will miss parts of the show. For a private space on an occasion, they do the job, but the ten Loges do the same job with a far better view of the stage. If it is the view you are buying, book the centre of the Dress Circle or the Stalls instead.
What are the Loges at the Prince Edward Theatre?
Ten small private seating areas at the sides of the Dress Circle, holding two to four people each, 26 seats in total, five a side per level. They came in with the 1992 refurbishment. They feel like a private Box, they sit close to the stage, and the view from them is close to unobstructed, which is a combination you almost never get.
Which side seats should I book?
A Loge first, every time. Then a Dress Circle slip if it is cheap and you do not mind being side-on. The Grand Circle slips are for when price is the deciding factor. The Boxes are the ones we would talk you out of.
