Rowley's (4 minutes). Jermyn Street. Steak and chips done properly, and they've been doing it on Jermyn Street for fifty years. It's set up for pre-theatre, so you can eat well and still make the curtain.

Flat Iron Piccadilly (5 minutes). Denman Street. One cut of steak at one low price, and it takes bookings.

Fallow (3 minutes). St James's Market. Seasonal British cooking with very little waste, open from breakfast until late, and the pick if you'd like something other than steak.

Bars and pubs

Tom Cribb (2 minutes). Panton Street, just off Haymarket. An old boxing pub named after the bare-knuckle champion, the closest proper pint to the door.

St James Tavern (5 minutes). Great Windmill Street, near Piccadilly Circus. A big Victorian pub, easy to get a drink in before the show.

The Harp (7 minutes). Chandos Place, towards Covent Garden. A small pub with an award-winning cask range, worth the walk if you take your beer seriously.

The Z Hotel Piccadilly (2 minutes). Orange Street, just behind the theatre. Compact rooms at a low price.

hub by Premier Inn London Covent Garden (7 minutes). St Martin's Lane. Small rooms by design, booked for the location and the price rather than the space.

The Trafalgar St James (4 minutes). Spring Gardens, on the corner of Trafalgar Square. The five-star option if the hotel is part of the treat.
