About the theatre

Around 1,200 seats over the Stalls, Dress Circle and Grand Circle, in a building that is tall rather than wide. Nothing obstructs the view from the auditorium floor, because there are no pillars in it, which is rarer than it sounds in a theatre of this age.

One quirk of the Aldwych: you go down steps to the Stalls, rather than walking in at ground level. The foyer is at street level and the Stalls are below it.

Where to sit, in short

Best seats: central Stalls, or the front of the Dress Circle. Best value: the rear Dress Circle, which beats the cheap rear Stalls for the same money. Think twice about the back of the Stalls from about Row O, and the back of the Grand Circle.

The row-by-row picture is on each level:

  • Stalls, closest, and where the overhang decides everything
  • Dress Circle, the best view in the building, and the best value in it
  • Grand Circle, higher than you expect and better than its reputation

Or start with the seating plan if you would rather see the whole house first.

FAQs

How many seats does the Aldwych Theatre have?

Around 1,200 across three levels. The exact number shifts slightly with each show's layout, which can add or remove a few seats here and there.

Can I take a bag into the Aldwych Theatre?

Small bags yes, large ones no. There is a bag search on arrival, and large backpacks and suitcases are discouraged and will not be taken in the cloakroom either. The cloakroom is in the main foyer opposite the Box Office and charges £1 an item for anything that will not fit under your seat.

Can I take my own food and drink into the auditorium?

Only food and drink bought at the theatre. You cannot bring your own, alcohol included, and nothing hot is allowed. Anything you buy at the bar goes into a plastic cup before you take it in.

Is it cheaper to buy at the Box Office or on the day?

No on both counts. The Box Office sells at the same prices as online. Prices do not drift down as the date approaches either. Some shows do use dynamic pricing, which means prices can go up or down. That is show dependent rather than venue dependent.

Is there a dress code at the Aldwych Theatre?

No. Jeans and trainers are completely fine. Wear what you will be comfortable in.

When should I arrive?

Arrive 15 to 20 minutes before the start, no later. The entrance is narrow and the foyer is small, so it looks alarmingly packed about ten minutes before curtain and then clears quickly.

What happens if I arrive late?

You'll be held until the first suitable break in the show and shown to your seat then. How long that takes depends on the show, so aim to arrive 15 to 20 minutes before, no later.

Can I book Aldwych Theatre tickets by phone?

Yes. Call 020 7193 9050 and a real person will help you choose seats and book them.

Do you offer group bookings?

Yes. For six or more, call 020 7193 9050 and we will find seats together for your party and sort the best option and price.
