By tube
Covent Garden (Piccadilly line) is the closest, about 6 minutes' walk, though it's a small, lift-only station that gets very busy after a show. Charing Cross (Northern and Bakerloo lines) is about 8 minutes and is often the smoother walk, as is Holborn (Central and Piccadilly lines). Temple (District and Circle lines) is about 9 minutes, down towards the river.
By train
Charing Cross is the nearest mainline station, about 8 minutes on foot along the Strand. Waterloo is about 20 minutes away over Waterloo Bridge if you fancy the walk and the view.
By bus
Two sets of stops are close to the door. Which bus to take depends on where you're coming from.
Aldwych / Drury Lane, at the bottom of Catherine Street, about a minute's walk:
- From North London: the 1 (Camden Town), the 68 (Euston and Russell Square), the 76 (Tottenham Hale and Stoke Newington), the 243 (Wood Green and Dalston) and the 341 (Tottenham and Angel)
- From South London: the 59 (Brixton), the 68 (Camberwell and Elephant & Castle), the 172 (New Cross and Elephant & Castle) and the 188 (Greenwich)
Strand, at Savoy Street, about 2 minutes' walk:
- From West London: the 9 (Hammersmith and Knightsbridge) and the 23 (Paddington and Marble Arch)
- From the east and the City: the 15 (Limehouse and Tower Hill) and the 26 (Hackney and Liverpool Street)
- From North London: the 91 (Wood Green and King's Cross) and the 139 (Golders Green and Baker Street)
- From South London: the 87 (Clapham Junction and Vauxhall) and the 176 (Forest Hill and Camberwell)
Late at night, the N1, N9, N15, N21, N26, N44, N68, N87, N89, N91, N155, N171, N199, N343, N550 and N551 use the same Aldwych and Strand stops.
By taxi
Black cabs are easy to find on the Strand, the Aldwych and around Covent Garden, and a driver can set you down on Catherine Street, right outside the theatre.
By car
There's no parking at the theatre, and driving in isn't the easy option. Two car parks are about 10 minutes' walk away:
- Urban Parking, 42 Shelton Street, towards Seven Dials. Open 24 hours
- Q-Park Covent Garden, Bedfordbury. Small, and it closes at 11pm
Book a space ahead if you can.
- Congestion Charge: £18 a day. It runs 7am to 6pm on weekdays and midday to 6pm at weekends, so a matinee means paying it, and arriving after 6pm for an evening show means you don't.
- ULEZ: all day, every day, if your car doesn't meet the standard.
What time to arrive
Arrive 15 to 20 minutes before, no later. The doors open about 45 minutes before the show. The foyer is small and the Stalls are down a flight of stairs below street level, so a few minutes in hand makes the arrival easier.
