The Duchess sits between Covent Garden and the Strand, so there's no shortage of restaurants, pubs and hotels nearby, and some of the best are on Catherine Street itself. These are the ones we'd point you to.

Restaurants

The Opera Tavern (1 minute). Catherine Street, a few doors up. Spanish and Italian small plates, with a charcoal grill, and close enough to time easily before the show.

Balthazar (3 minutes). Russell Street. A big, buzzy French brasserie, and a proper pre-theatre sit-down if you want to make an evening of it.

Café Murano (3 minutes). Tavistock Street. Angela Hartnett's relaxed Italian, with a theatre menu every day, which takes the timing worry away.

Bars and pubs

The Nell of Old Drury (1 minute). Catherine Street. A classic little theatre pub facing Drury Lane, and the obvious spot for a quick drink before the show.

The Marquess of Anglesey (3 minutes). Bow Street, opposite the Royal Opera House. A roomy corner pub that's easy to get into before a show, with a roof terrace upstairs.

The White Hart (4 minutes). Drury Lane. Relaxed and handy, and it takes bookings, which helps with a group.

Hotels

Strand Palace (5 minutes). The Strand. A large, well-priced and very central hotel, and a short walk back after the show.

The Z Hotel Covent Garden (6 minutes). Bedford Street. Compact rooms at a sensible price, the easy pick if the bed is just somewhere to go after the show.

The Savoy (7 minutes). The Strand. The famous five-star, if you want the stay to be part of the night.
