By tube

Charing Cross is the one to use: 2 to 3 minutes, on the Bakerloo and Northern lines, and a mainline station as well. Come out onto the Strand or Trafalgar Square and walk south down Whitehall.

Embankment is about 7 minutes on the Bakerloo, Northern, Circle and District lines, up Villiers Street and across the corner of Trafalgar Square. Leicester Square is 7 to 8 minutes on the Piccadilly and Northern, and Westminster is about 10 on the Jubilee, Circle and District, straight down Whitehall past Downing Street, which is roughly five minutes from the theatre, and out at the Houses of Parliament.

By bus

Whitehall is a trunk route, so a lot of buses stop within a minute of the door.

Outside the door, under a minute: the 12, 24, 26, 87, 88, 91, 159 and 453 all stop on Whitehall itself. The nearest stop is 35 metres from the theatre.

Three to four minutes, at Trafalgar Square and Charing Cross: the 9, 15, 23, 29, 139 and 176.

At night a large part of the network runs through Trafalgar Square and Charing Cross, including the N91, N9, N11, N15, N21 and N29.

Parking, and driving into Whitehall

Congestion Charge and ULEZ both apply, and Whitehall itself is busy and restricted.

The closest car park is shut. Q-Park Trafalgar is temporarily closed. Use Q-Park Leicester Square, which is the nearest working option, or Q-Park Chinatown on Newport Place, WC2H 7PU, which is about 10 to 12 minutes' walk and starts from around £19.

The theatre parking discount is 50% off a four-hour session with a valid theatre ticket for that day, which may be checked when you arrive or when you leave. Anything over four hours is charged at the standard rate. Ignore the "up to 24 hours" version, which is out of date wherever you find it.

By taxi

Whitehall is a busy road just up from Downing Street and the Houses of Parliament with restrictions along most of it, so a drop-off is easier on one of the side streets than directly outside the theatre. There are ranks at Charing Cross station, two to three minutes away.

By bike

There are Santander Cycle docking stations around Trafalgar Square, on Northumberland Avenue and along Victoria Embankment, and on-street stands on Whitehall and the side streets.

The Stage Door

The stage door and the backstage area are round the back of the building, off Spring Gardens, the street that runs parallel to Whitehall behind the theatre.

It is the company's door. It is not a way into the theatre, and everybody with a ticket goes in at the front on Whitehall.

What time to arrive

Arrive 15 to 20 minutes before, no later.

Bags are checked on the way in, so allow a few minutes for that. The foyer and Box Office are at street level; the Stalls is downstairs and the Dress Circle is up, and the Dress Circle is stairs only, so give yourself a moment if you are heading up there.

Oh, Mary! runs 80 minutes straight through with no interval, so a latecomer waits for a break in the performance that may be a long way in or may not come at all.

FAQs

What is the nearest tube station to the Trafalgar Theatre?

Charing Cross, 2 to 3 minutes on foot, on the Bakerloo and Northern lines and a mainline station too. Embankment is about 7 minutes, Leicester Square 7 to 8 and Westminster about 10.

Which buses stop near the Trafalgar Theatre?

The 12, 24, 26, 87, 88, 91, 159 and 453 stop on Whitehall itself, under a minute from the door. The 9, 15, 23, 29, 139 and 176 stop at Trafalgar Square and Charing Cross, three to four minutes away.

Does the 159 bus go to the Trafalgar Theatre?

Yes. The 159 stops on Whitehall a few steps from the entrance, and so do the 24 and the 91. At night the N91 runs through Trafalgar Square, a three to four minute walk from the door.

Where can I park near the Trafalgar Theatre?

Q-Park Leicester Square is the nearest one that is open, with Q-Park Chinatown on Newport Place about 10 to 12 minutes away. The Q-Park on Trafalgar itself is temporarily closed. Congestion Charge and ULEZ both apply.

How early should I get to the Trafalgar Theatre?

Fifteen to twenty minutes before the performance, and no later. Bags are checked on the way in, and with an 80-minute show that runs straight through there may be no way in at all if you miss the start.

Where is the stage door at the Trafalgar Theatre?

Round the back on Spring Gardens, not on Whitehall. It is the company's door and not a way in: your ticket takes you through the front. It gets asked about more here than at most theatres this size, because the lead role in the current production changes hands every few weeks and the names doing it are well known.
