Restaurants, Pubs and Hotels Near the Trafalgar Theatre
Four pubs sit inside a three-minute walk, three of them on Whitehall itself, along with a five-star hotel across the road and a cafe that stays open until ten. The restaurants thin out as you go south down Whitehall, so most of the eating near the Trafalgar Theatre is north of it, around Trafalgar Square and Cockspur Street.
Where to eat
The restaurants below are in order of how far you have to walk. Three of them are inside three minutes.
- Horse & Guardsman, 16-18 Whitehall, next door to the theatre on the same side. Under a minute. A wood-panelled former bank with high ceilings and arched windows, open 10am to 11pm every day. It does dinner and the pre-show pint in the same visit, and there is a mezzanine you can book for a group
- Caffè Concerto, 43 Whitehall. 1 to 2 minutes. Open 8am to 10pm, seven days, which is the widest window on this street. Italian food, patisserie and afternoon tea, and no booking needed
- Thai Square Trafalgar Square, 21-24 Cockspur Street. 3 minutes. The pre-theatre menu is £30 for three courses, including a glass of Thai wine or a beer, £23 for two, and it is served daily until 6:30pm. Tables for two to eight, so it works for a group. Plan around that deadline rather than the curtain
Where to drink
- The Old Shades, 37-39 Whitehall, across the road from the theatre. 1 minute. A proper pint a few steps from the door. It fills up before curtain and is three deep by seven o'clock. Go early or go to the next one
- The Clarence, 53 Whitehall. 2 minutes. The corner pub at Great Scotland Yard, and where to go when the Old Shades is full. Open 11am to 11pm Monday to Saturday with food until 10pm
- The Admiralty, 66 Trafalgar Square. 3 minutes. Three floors at the top of Whitehall, themed on HMS Victory. The only place in range that will absorb a party of twelve without a booking
Where to stay
- Great Scotland Yard Hotel, 3-5 Great Scotland Yard. 1 to 2 minutes. Five star, in the old Metropolitan Police building across the road from the theatre, and the closest bed to the theatre by some way
- Club Quarters Hotel, Trafalgar Square, 8 Northumberland Avenue. 4 minutes. Four star in a nineteenth-century building, with a grill and wine bar downstairs. The sensible middle of the list and the best distance for the money
- The Clermont London, Charing Cross, Strand. 5 minutes. Directly above Charing Cross station, so if you are coming in by train you can leave the platform and be in your room
- The Z Hotel Piccadilly, 2 Orange Street. 6 minutes. Compact rooms, but it is clean, central and the one to book if you would rather the money went on the tickets
