By tube
Leicester Square, on the Northern and Piccadilly lines, is right outside, about 2 minutes away. Leave by exit 1, Charing Cross Road South. If it's busy, Covent Garden, on the Piccadilly line, is about 5 minutes away, and Piccadilly Circus, on the Bakerloo and Piccadilly lines, about 7.
By train
Charing Cross is the nearest mainline station, under 10 minutes on foot along the edge of Trafalgar Square and past the National Portrait Gallery. It has National Rail services to Kent and South East London, via Waterloo East and London Bridge, and the tube station there is on the Northern and Bakerloo lines.
By bus
The closest stops are on Charing Cross Road by Leicester Square station, a minute from the door. Which bus to take depends on where you're coming from:
- From North London: the 24 (Hampstead, Camden Town and Warren Street) and the 29 (Wood Green, Finsbury Park, Holloway and Camden Town) stop on Charing Cross Road by Leicester Square station. The 19 (Finsbury Park, Highbury, Islington and Bloomsbury) stops at Cambridge Circus and on Shaftesbury Avenue by Chinatown, about 3 minutes' walk. The 91 (Wood Green, Holloway, King's Cross and Russell Square) and the 139 (Golders Green, West Hampstead and Baker Street) stop at Trafalgar Square and Charing Cross, about 5 minutes' walk.
- From South London: the 176 (Penge, Sydenham, Forest Hill, Dulwich, Camberwell, Elephant & Castle and Waterloo) stops on Charing Cross Road by Leicester Square station. The 24 comes up from Pimlico, Victoria and Westminster to the same stops, and the 87 (Wandsworth, Clapham Junction, Vauxhall and Westminster) stops at Charing Cross.
- From West London: the 14 (Putney, Fulham, Chelsea, South Kensington and Knightsbridge) stops on Shaftesbury Avenue by Chinatown, about 3 minutes' walk. The 9 (Hammersmith, Kensington and Knightsbridge) and the 23 (Ladbroke Grove, Paddington and Marble Arch) stop at Trafalgar Square, about 5 minutes' walk.
- From the City and East London: the 15 (Blackwall, Aldgate, Tower of London and St Paul's) and the 26 (Hackney Wick, Shoreditch, Liverpool Street and St Paul's) stop at Charing Cross, about 5 minutes' walk.
The 12, 88, 159 and 453 also stop at Trafalgar Square, about 5 minutes' walk.
Going home late, the N5, N20, N29, N41 and N279 stop on Charing Cross Road by Leicester Square station, and the N19 at Cambridge Circus.
By taxi
There are plenty of black cabs around Leicester Square, Trafalgar Square and the Strand, and there's a taxi rank at Charing Cross station. Expect to be set down on a side street rather than at the door, because Charing Cross Road backs up badly at curtain time. Cranbourn Street, round the corner, is the usual drop-off.
By car
There's no parking at the theatre. Q-Park Leicester Square, on Whitcomb Street, and Q-Park Chinatown, on Newport Place, are the nearest car parks, each a few minutes' walk away.
You're inside the Congestion Charge zone, which costs £18 a day. It runs midday to 6pm at weekends and 7am to 6pm on weekdays, so it catches a matinee but not an evening performance. The ULEZ is a separate charge that runs at all hours, but it only applies to vehicles that don't meet the emissions standards, and most newer cars pay nothing.
For a Blue Badge, there are disabled bays nearby on St Martin's Lane and Charing Cross Road.
What time to arrive
Arrive 15 to 20 minutes before the start, no later. There's a security bag check on the way in, and the Box Office opens 2 hours 30 minutes before the show if you're collecting tickets.
If you're late, you may not be let in until a suitable break in the performance, and entry isn't guaranteed. At a play that can mean missing the whole first act and waiting for the interval. John Proctor Is the Villain runs straight through with no interval, so arriving late for that one could mean missing most of it, or all of it.
