Finding West Street

West Street is a short curved street between Cambridge Circus and Seven Dials. It's barely off the main roads but feels tucked away, so there is a danger of taking the wrong turn and ending up further away. Give yourself a few extra minutes if possible to find it.

By tube

Leicester Square (Northern and Piccadilly lines) is the closest, 2 to 3 minutes on foot. Come out towards Cranbourn Street, walk up Upper St Martin's Lane, and West Street is on your left. Covent Garden (Piccadilly line) and Tottenham Court Road (Northern, Central and Elizabeth lines) are both around 10 minutes.

By train

Charing Cross is the nearest mainline station, about 10 minutes on foot through Trafalgar Square and up St Martin's Lane.

By bus

The closest stop is outside Leicester Square station on Charing Cross Road, a minute or two from the door, and Cambridge Circus, at the top of West Street, is two minutes away. Which bus depends on where you're coming from:

  • From North London: the 24 (the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead and Camden Town), the 29 (Turnpike Lane, Finsbury Park and Camden Town) and the 19 (Finsbury Park, Highbury and Angel). The 19 stops at Cambridge Circus
  • From West London: the 14 (Putney, Fulham and South Kensington), to Cambridge Circus
  • From South London: the 176 (Penge, Dulwich, Elephant & Castle and Waterloo)
  • From Victoria and Pimlico: the 24

Late at night, the N5, N20, N29, N41 and N279 run on the same stretch.

By taxi

You'll find a black cab on Charing Cross Road or St Martin's Lane at almost any hour, both a minute from the door. West Street itself is narrow, but a cab can set you down outside the theatre.

By car

Not the easy option here. There's no theatre car park, but two are close by:

  • Q-Park Leicester Square, Whitcomb Street, the nearest, just round the corner
  • Q-Park Chinatown, Newport Place, about 5 minutes

You're inside the Congestion Charge zone, which runs 7am to 6pm on weekdays and midday to 6pm at weekends, £18 a day. Arrive after 6pm for an evening performance and you won't pay it, but a matinee falls inside it. The ULEZ runs at all hours if your car doesn't meet its standards.

What time to arrive

Arrive 15 to 20 minutes before, no later. The theatre is on a narrow street and the foyer is small, so it doesn't take much of a queue to slow things down, and bags are checked at the door. The doors open 90 minutes before the show, and you can take your seat from about 30 minutes before.

If you're late, you'll be held until a suitable pause in the show, which for a tense show can mean a wait.
