Two entrances, at two levels

The main entrance on Savoy Court brings you into the foyer at the top of the building, at Grand Circle level. Everything below it is stairs: 32 down to the Dress Circle, 75 down to the Stalls, no lift.

The other door is on Carting Lane, the turning that drops down from the Strand, and it opens at street level into the Dress Circle. It is not a general entrance: the venue opens it for access bookings, arranged with its own access team.

By tube

Charing Cross is closest, around 5 minutes along the Strand, on the Northern and Bakerloo lines. Covent Garden is around 7 minutes across Covent Garden market on the Piccadilly line, and Embankment is around 7 on the Circle and District. Temple, on the same two lines, is around 10.

Charing Cross is the one to aim for unless your line runs to one of the others, because the walk is straight along the Strand with nothing to work out.

By train

Charing Cross is the mainline station as well, so any train into Charing Cross leaves you around 5 minutes from the door.

By bus

The nearest stops are on the Strand either side of Savoy Court, at Savoy Street and Southampton Street, with more at Lancaster Place by Waterloo Bridge, all within two minutes.

  • From the west: the 9 from Hammersmith, 23 from Westbourne Park and 87 from Wandsworth
  • From the north: the 1 from Hampstead, 68 from Euston, 91 and 243 from Wood Green, 76 and 341 from Tottenham, 139 from Golders Green, 176 and 188 from Tottenham Court Road, and the SL6 from Russell Square
  • From the east: the 15 from Blackwall and the 26 from Hackney, through Liverpool Street
  • From Victoria and Westminster: the 26 again, along Whitehall and the Strand
  • From south of the river, over Waterloo Bridge: the 1, 59, 68, 76, 139, 172, 176, 188, 243, 341 and SL6, most of them through Waterloo

Night buses stop on the same stretch, including the N9, N15, N21, N26, N87, N89, N91 and N199, with the N1 and N68 at Lancaster Place.

By taxi

Savoy Court exists so a cab can set you down at the door. It is also the one road in the country where cars keep to the right, a layout from the days of carriages pulling up at the theatre entrance. Give the driver Savoy Court rather than the Strand.

Driving and parking

There is no parking at the theatre. The nearest car park the venue lists is Q-Park Covent Garden at 34-35 Bedfordbury, WC2N 4DU, where ATG customers get 15% off parking booked in advance through Q-Park's ATG page. The others it lists are the London Covent Garden Parking Garage on Parker Street and NCP Shaftesbury Avenue. The Strand is inside the Congestion Charge zone until 6pm.

What time to arrive

Doors open 90 minutes before the performance and the auditorium about 45 minutes before. Arrive 15 to 20 minutes before, no later. If you are in the Stalls, come at the earlier end of that, because your seat is 75 steps below the door. Latecomers are admitted at a suitable gap in the show, which usually means the interval.
