More About the Savoy Theatre
When it opened on 10 October 1881 it was the first public building in the world lit entirely by electricity. Richard D'Oyly Carte built it for Gilbert and Sullivan, and the operas that played here took its name: the Savoy operas. The hotel next door came eight years later, paid for out of their profits.
What you sit in today is not the 1881 auditorium. The entrance moved from the Embankment side up to Savoy Court in 1902. The interior was rebuilt in Art Deco style in 1929, and on 12 February 1990 a fire destroyed everything but the stage. The theatre reopened on 19 July 1993, restored to the 1929 interior.
It is Grade II* listed and has been run by ATG since 2004.
